Santafiora Joins Margraf: A Solid Future for Italian Stone

Margraf has completed the 100% acquisition of Santafiora S.r.l., bringing two strategic quarries, Santafiora® (Tuscany) and Lavagrigia (Lazio), under direct ownership and making Santafiora®, Lavagrigia and Lavarosa exclusive Margraf materials. The move tightens control of the supply chain from quarry to finished product and broadens the palette available to architects and builders worldwide.

“With this acquisition, we’re reinforcing our commitment to excellence and to the value of Italian resources, bringing a unique material to market. The Santafiora and Lavagrigia quarries are an extraordinary heritage of quality and tradition that we will preserve and enhance through innovation, sustainability and expertise,” said Roberto Xompero, CEO, Margraf.

For U.S. studios and contractors, the integration means clearer provenance, faster decisions, and consistent supply on long‑running programs public realm, hospitality, retail and high‑end residential. Direct quarry ownership allows Margraf to manage every step, from extraction and cutting to finishing and distribution, reducing uncertainty and ensuring material continuity across multi‑phase projects.

The materials, up close.

Santafiora® — warm by nature, tough by design

Quarried in the Tuscan Maremma, Santafiora® is a sandstone whose appeal lies in the natural warmth of its palette: hazelnut and earthy browns that shift toward lighter, sun‑washed tones as the light changes over the day. Behind that calm look sits a technical profile built for the elements, compactness, hardness and frost resistance, which is why the stone performs in extreme climatic conditions and in coastal locations where salt spray and wet/dry cycles are constant. In urban atmospheres, it stands up to smog and acid rain without sacrificing finish or color integrity.

Santafiora® lends itself to ventilated façades and bonded cladding systems, and it’s equally comfortable underfoot in plazas, promenades and landscape transitions where visual continuity matters from outside to in. Available factory finishes, polished, honed, brushed, bush‑hammered, sandblasted, and limaia, offer a nuanced toolkit for designers to tune texture, reflectance and grip to the exact use case.

If you’re looking for a note of rarity, Santafiora® introduces delicate, millennia‑old oyster fossils that reveal a subtle pearlescent glow when polished, a natural inlay that reads as material history rather than ornament. It’s a quietly striking option for feature walls, reception cores and museum‑grade interiors where the brief calls for narrative as much as performance.

Scale isn’t theoretical. Torino Outlet Village, over 29,000 m² of Santafiora® across floors, walls, stairs and bathrooms, shows how a single stone can carry an entire public realm when durability and restraint are the design drivers.

Lavagrigia — a contemporary grey with volcanic roots

As the name hints, Lavagrigia is volcanic in origin. Its contemporary grey read sits comfortably with glass, anodized aluminum and weathered woods, making it a natural fit for streetscapes, plazas and high‑traffic exteriors where the balance of resistance, functionality and refined aesthetics is the brief. In practice, designers lean on it when they want a crisp, modern field that still feels geological, timber‑warm spaces often look sharper when grounded by Lavagrigia’s quiet mineral grain.

Lavarosa — expanding the exclusive palette

With the acquisition, Lavarosa joins Santafiora® and Lavagrigia as an exclusive Margraf material, extending the spectrum available to specifiers who want a coherent, all‑Italian family across façades, hardscape and interior transitions. For multi‑phase rollouts or hospitality brands that rely on consistent identity, that exclusivity simplifies approvals and long‑term maintenance planning.

From quarry to project: why vertical integration matters.

Owning the quarries means traceability from block to project, plus the ability to align extraction schedules with fabrication and delivery, an important lever when projects span years and multiple bid packages. Coupled with Margraf’s large‑scale logistics hub and online warehouse, it helps teams check availability, organize lot selection, and request quotations without losing time.
The same vertical control supports finish consistency and long‑run color control, two points that often make or break a façade mock‑up. The upshot is fewer surprises on site and fewer compromises as drawings turn into shop tickets and then into stone at scale.
